Singh Family

The Singh family moved to Whitlam seeking a custom-built home that could accommodate their multi-generational living needs. Drawn by the spacious blocks and central location, they have found Whitlam to be the perfect place for their family’s dream home.

Why did you decide to custom-build your house instead of buying off the plan?

We decided to go custom because the fixed plan did not meet our requirements. We needed larger living spaces and multi-generational living, we got the idea from Suburban Land Agency’s office and their display homes. We decided to build a house where we have a separate living space for our parents.

What made you decide to move to Whitlam?

It’s close to a city and it’s in the middle of Canberra. Everything is accessible… the airport, school, Belconnen Mall. If I compare with where we used to live, it took about half an hour for me to go to work, but now it’s only taking me 15 minutes to go to work. I can spend more time with my family, taking kids to the park. Whitlam has provided me that life here.

Did Whitlam’s bigger blocks attract you to the suburb?

Yes. We chose Whitlam because we found a block which was above 500 square metres. With young kids and a trampoline, smaller blocks in other areas wouldn't work for us.

Did you enjoy custom-designing your house?

We enjoyed the process of building. We loved it when we decided the joinery, what kitchen we’re looking for, what stone we’re looking for. We love choosing the colours that we really like. We dreamed about a house which had all the mix of all the colours, and that’s sometimes difficult if you’re not building your own customised home. That’s why we chose to customise, so we can put all the colours in a way that we really want to.

What is the Whitlam community like?

We love participating in the community. In fact, my parents enjoy living in Whitlam even more than I do because they do some adult classes, English teaching classes at the Mingle community space. They have lots of activities, even yoga classes. I remember enjoying a Halloween festival here, and that was our first festival when we moved in. We started with two people, but when we finished, we were about 50-odd people. That was quite a vibrant community feel. We were welcomed by them quite well.

Are you looking forward to any of the new amenities being built?

We’re looking forward to the shops, which are getting built at the moment, and the Whitlam school, I think, which will be completed by 2026, because our little one is to be starting school by then. We look forward to the new community and a new park which is getting built.

What are three words that describe Whitlam for you?
