We are happy to announce our new cultural initiative in partnership with Belco Arts, aimed at embedding First Nations culture into Canberra’s public spaces through a self-determined approach led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The program began with the appointment of a local Ngunnawal woman to a newly created role at Belco Arts, helping guide and deliver this important work. It will include walks, talks, storytelling, cultural advice, mentorships, artist opportunities, and collaborations that bring together First Nations artists from across the region.
The first artworks under this program have now been installed at the North Wright Sustainable Precinct. These pieces are publicly accessible and celebrate the stories of Sky Country, as envisioned by two incredible artists: Jazz Matthews (Wilay Designs), a proud Ngunawal woman, and Rebekah Weddell, a Dhanggati/Birrbay woman who has lived on Ngunnawal Country for 13 years.
Jazz’s artwork reflects the deep connection between Aboriginal people and the sky, incorporating seasonal guides, cultural tools, and pathways that represent movement and growth. Rebekah’s piece captures the swirling star trails of the night sky, symbolising time, continuity, and connection drawing inspiration from Van Gogh’s Starry Night and the Brindabella ranges.
