SLA's Display Village is located at the Corner of Sculthorpe Ave and Klaus Moje St, Whitlam.

SLA’s Innovation Precinct has been established in Whitlam to showcase our commitment to creating thriving communities.

The Innovation Precinct showcases 4 sustainable development dwellings designed for multi-generational living, a climate-wise garden, a sales and information centre, the Mingle Community Hub and the Heartbeat cafe and shop.

SLA’s demonstration dwellings showcase low carbon living, including

  • airtight and well insulated building envelopes (5 air changes/hour)
  • renewable energy production through rooftop solar and battery storage
  • heat recovery system for healthy indoor air climate and energy saving
  • uPVC framed window systems with double glazing and low argon fill
  • thermal mass through burnished concrete with 70% recycled fly ash content
  • recycled and carbon neutral bricks
  • a green roof
  • permeable driveways and paving for stormwater penetration
  • electric vehicle charging to each dwelling
  • livable design (platinum, gold and silver level) for accessibility and adaptability.

Feels like Home

SLA's Display Village is a temporary service over the next 3-5 years to showcase sustainability and help create a community hub while the local centre is built. All dwellings and blocks of land will eventually be sold for residential use. SLA's Display Village and Innovation Precinct is a means to enable new residents and visitors to meaningfully connect and participate with Whitlam and SLA's services.

Take a stroll and view some of Canberra’s newest and innovative home and garden designs. Or meet your new neighbours at one of the many Mingle events planned throughout the year. A café and shop will offer visitors and locals a casual place to meet, socialise and network, or pick up some milk and bread.

Get involved

SLA is working with Woden Community Services  to establish a creative place activation program and operate the café for the SLA Display Village in Whitlam and its growing community. The Place Curation Service is a contracted role external to SLA with the purpose of facilitating a creative grassroots approach to placemaking through cultural programming and sustainability initiatives. It will extend the already existing Mingle community development program with a series of new activities.

As part of the place curation services, Woden Community Services is operating the Agency’s Heartbeat café and convenience shop. This temporary space will be an integral meeting, learning, and sharing space for the community until permanent facilities are available in Whitlam.

Our Mingle community development team is working from the Mingle Community Space later this year and is already engaging with the community with a program of activities and events for residents. Over the next two years, Mingle and the place curator will undertake a community and cultural program, combining the works and interests of local residents, artists and business start-ups to bring the spaces of the Village to life. The future design and delivery of the Whitlam local shop and community precinct will benefit from the outcomes and experiences of these start-up initiatives and community projects at the Display Village.
