Gungahlin Town Centre

Gungahlin Town Centre is a lively and established major shopping, commercial, and community services hub in the fast growing district of Gungahlin in Canberra’s north.

Gungahlin Town Centre is at the heart of the Gungahlin region which is home to approximately 90,000 residents. The bustling Town Centre offers the key components of a vibrant community, including schools, a library, medical services, commercial services, employment opportunities, cafés, restaurants, bars, special retailers and department stores. The light rail serves to connect the Town Centre with the City and the various services and attractions along the route, providing a fast and easy transport option.

A big attraction for visitors to the Gungahlin Town Centre is its ‘urban village’ atmosphere. There’s a relaxed shopping environment, combined with an urban nightlife scene which includes restaurants and cafes. 

Planning for the future

Gungahlin Town Centre East

Gungahlin Town Centre East is a large, mostly undeveloped precinct of the Town Centre. Adopting a place-based approach to guide the development of this precinct, Suburban Land Agency (SLA) engaged with the community to capture their priorities and aspirations. This resulted in the following visionary and guiding documents for the area:

Gungahlin Town Centre East: Place Ambition and Design Framework

The Place Ambition and Design and Place Framework will guide the SLA in creating a detailed subdivision design for the area. This design will build on the ACT Government’s successes with light rail infrastructure and the Government Office Block. The Place Ambition outlines four Place Pillars that will guide development:  

  • Cares - An urban experience in a natural landscape, embedding Country into place
  • Connects - A destination for public life & community connection 
  • Creates - A vibrant 18hr neighbourhood with a next-generation agenda 
  • Curates - A showcase of sustainable city-making excellence for public life & community connection.

  4. Subdivision Development Proposal, (in progress)
  5. Assessment of Subdivision Design Application (Development Application) (2025 to 2026)
    1. First and Second Public Notification 2025
    2. Territory Planning Authority Assessment and decision.
  6. Commencement of civil construction of approved subdivision works (2026 to 2028)
  7. Initial public release of land parcels, (2026)
