We are excited to be growing available housing options in Canberra through the innovative Build-to-Rent model.
Bringing Build-to-Rent to Canberra
Build-to-Rent increases the supply of rental housing with multi-unit dwellings that are rented out rather than being sold.
These are often owned long-term by a single owner and designed with high-quality common spaces and homes plus extra services for residents.
By bringing Build-to-Rent to Canberra, we're looking to:
- increase the number of private rental properties in the ACT, particularly for the more affordable end of the rental market
- increase choice and housing diversity for renters, with homes that are specifically designed to meet renters' needs
- offer opportunities for tenants to establish themselves as part of a community and personalise their homes.
More information is available in the ACT Government’s Build-to-Rent Prospectus, which sets out opportunities for Build-to-Rent investment in Canberra.

Build-to-Rent releases
Pilot release in Turner
In the 2022-23 financial year, SLA released Block 3 Section 57 in Turner as a site to launch Build-to-Rent with a minimum affordable rental component. This site has been chosen due to its size and proximity to the light rail and the CBD.
Next release in Gungahlin
In the 2023-24 Budget, the ACT Government announced its commitment to release a site for Build-to-Rent in the Gungahlin Town Centre in 2024-25 with a minimum affordable rental component.
Market Sounding
In November 2021, the SLA undertook a market sounding process to seek feedback about bringing Build-to-Rent to Canberra. See the following report and video on what we heard:
Our vision for Build-to-Rent is part of our larger Housing Strategic Action Plan, which aims to increase the number of affordable living options across Canberra.
