Whitlam was launched to the Canberra community at a unique — and Canberra-first — event at the iconic East Lawns on Saturday 16 November 2019.

In October 2019, we invited Canberrans to enter a competition to win tickets to the ‘Feels like Home’ movie night; courtesy of Mov’In Bed, the biggest outdoor bed cinema in the world.

More than 2,500 people entered, all vying for their chance to watch 80’s classic The Goonies under the stars, and to learn more about the new suburb of Whitlam.

The lucky winners — over 130 people and their guests — descended upon the Parliamentary Zone on Saturday night. Some dressed up in PJs and slippers, others brought their pooches to join in the fun.

After selecting their bed and rummaging through their goodie-bag (complete with Whitlam-themed socks!), guests enjoyed the free popcorn and soft drinks on offer. Local street food legends the Kransky Brothers also cooked kranskys and burgers which were delivered to guests in their beds.

As the evening went on and the temperatures dropped, guests snuggled down with their comfy pillows and warm blankets to enjoy the night’s proceedings.

First up was a Welcome to Country by Ngunnawal elder Warren Daley. This was followed by the Whitlam manifesto; a 90-second emotive piece about the meaning of home.

Next up, the first two episodes of the FEELS LIKE HOME series. Nipuni Wijewickrema from GG’s Flowers and Mark Sarah from the Cockington Green both revealed what makes Canberra feel like home to them.

Finally, the feature film The Goonies; a classic 80’s story of a group of young misfits who discover an ancient map and set out on a quest to find a legendary pirate’s long-lost treasure.

The Suburban Land Agency would like to thank all the parties involved in helping stage such a unique event for the launch of Whitlam, and for everyone who joined us on the night.
