The ACT Government has launched a community engagement program to inform a Major Plan Amendment (MPA) to enable the revitalisation of the Mawson Group Centre. This will enable the provision of a second supermarket, a current term ACT Government commitment.
The revitalisation of the Mawson Group Centre proposes the provision of additional commercial and residential opportunities and possible upgrades to existing recreational, community and sporting facilities, and the MPA will establish the planning framework for this future development.
CEO Adam Davey said Suburban Land Agency (SLA) is committed to ensuring planning for the future of the Mawson Group Centre aligns with the broader vision for the Southern Gateway corridor.
“We want to understand how people live, shop and play in Mawson, and how people would like to see the shops and recreational facilities grow to support the existing and future Mawson community,” Mr Davey said.
The ACT Government is prioritising improving the Mawson Group Centre to ensure local residents are able to continue to enjoy the existing amenities, while longer-term planning processes continue to enable the second supermarket and also align Mawson’s development with the broader Southern Gateway corridor.
This means there are multiple opportunities for the community to share their input, to help shape Mawson now and into the future. This includes providing feedback to the draft Southern Gateway Planning and Design Framework, and to proposed public realm improvements around the Group Centre, as well as to the community engagement launched today to revitalise the Group Centre via a Major Plan Amendment process.
“Community input will inform the Major Plan Amendment, which subject to community feedback, we intend to lodge later this year.
“We encourage the community to come and speak with our team, so we can understand what’s most important to them in planning the future of the Mawson Group Centre,” Mr Davey said.
