Project Update: Final Sketch Plans – August 2020

The play space at Holdens Creek Pond Coombs has reached the final sketch plan phase.

All the major elements from the preliminary sketch plans are featured and as you may be able to see, there is a bit of a theme to this play space! To catch a glimpse of what is on the way, please check out the birds eye view and cross section sketches and read about some of the equipment which will feature below.

Other things that you might like to know

  • The final sketch plans show that parking will be provided for nine cars including one accessible parking spot.
  • The shade will ultimately be provided by trees and man-made shade structures. Whilst trees grow, the shade structures chosen are durable metal with perforations to allow air to circulate through. They are designed to look like seasonal leaves.
  • A selection of trees and shrubs will be planted around and through the play space.
  • Pond-side seating and shade will be provided as places to reflect and enjoy the view and wildlife.
  • Additional seating around the full perimeter of Holdens Creek Pond will be added.

We are also looking at opportunities to collaborate with Canberran artists on elements within the play space. Watch this space!

What happens next?

  • Detailed documentation and relevant internal Government approvals by December 2020
  • Tendering and tender award by March 2021
  • Build completion by November 2021.

Project Update: Preliminary Sketch Plans – May 2020

The Play Space at Holdens Creek Pond Coombs has reached the Preliminary Sketch Plan Phase with the release of the new concept plan and indicative elevations.  While there are still plenty of fine details to work through, the majority of elements have been retained including the birds nest tower, the pod structures, swings and slides, a BBQ and picnic area, shade structures and landscaping.

Importantly the new design for the play space better integrates with the site with the majority of elements now moved to the west of the site and benched into the terrain so as to minimise the visual impact from Edgeworth Parade.  Additional pond seating and shade structure have also been included for more passive recreation opportunities.

Due to a number of issues associated with COVID-19, the timeline for the project has been extended.  As at May 2020, the program is;

  • Final plan by August 2020
  • Detailed documentation and relevant internal Government approvals by December 2020
  • Tendering and tender award by March 2021
  • Build completion by November 2021.

Project Update: Final Design Specification - February 2020

Thank you to everyone who took part in Stage 2 of the Coombs Play Space consultation. The SLA has now carefully reviewed this feedback and undertaken further due diligence on sporting and play facilities in Coombs, adjacent suburbs and in the future Molonglo Town Centre. The Agency has also considered the various publicly available planning documents that existed at the time of the release of land in Coombs.

Based on this review, a revision to the design will be undertaken consistent with the below specification:

The revised design will not require a development application, however the project will undergo a second preliminary sketch plan phase before progressing through to a final sketch plan, construction documentation and tender, and construction. Sketches and 3D renders of the final design with more details of the final specification will be released publicly once completed. Design and construction timeframes will also be released once confirmed.

Project Update - December 2019

The second round of community engagement for the Coombs Play Space at Holden’s Creek Pond concluded in October 2019 and an independent consultation report has been provided to the Suburban Land Agency.

We are currently incorporating the feedback into our plans and designs for the future play space and anticipate providing an update in January 2020.

Thank you to all those who provided valuable feedback. If you would like to see what was said, please click into the report links:

About the Coombs Play Space at Holden’s Creek Pond

Consistent with the Coombs and North Coombs Estate Development Plans, and the Coombs Landscape Strategy, a Play Space is currently being planned for Edgeworth Parade, adjacent to Holden’s Creek Pond. The Play Space is intended to be an inclusive play space with something of interest for all ages as well as visitors to Holden’s Creek Pond and the Molonglo River Corridor.

In August 2019 the SLA appointed an independent consultancy, Communication Link, to develop and undertake the Stage 2 Engagement with community. This focused on:

  • the views on the draft design within individual stakeholder groups including local residents, existing and future users of Holdens Creek Pond and surrounds and interested community or stakeholder groups,
  • the size, scale and proposed inclusions in the current design, and
  • the application of the new Transport Canberra and City Services standards for Municipal Infrastructure (published in April 2019).
