Kingston Arts Precinct Strategy 2011

The purpose of the Kingston Arts Precinct Strategy was to outline a vision for the Kingston Arts Precinct by identifying opportunities to expand and enhance creative arts activity at the Kingston Foreshore, along with identifying future high-level needs and new purpose-built facilities to make it viable as an Arts Precinct.

Consultation activities that occurred during the development of the Kingston Arts Precinct Strategy included:

  • 1:1 interviews with representatives from 19 arts/cultural organisations including Glassworks, Old Bus Depot Markets, Craft ACT, Megalo, PhotoAccess, Canberra Contemporary Arts Space, Screen ACT, CIT, ProMusica, M16, Potters Society and Canberra Centenary Festival;
  • follow up interviews with the key visual arts organisations to source more detailed, high-level requirements;
  • collaborative workshop held with key stakeholders to provide clear information and build knowledge within the sector about the study, provide a summary of the consultations, test emerging directions for the precinct and obtain insights and advice from constituents that will help strengthen the study outcomes.

Kingston Section 49 Master Plan 2014

The Kingston Section 49 Master Plan was prepared to identify future opportunities in Section 49 Kingston and illustrate how the area could be developed as a high-quality mixed-use precinct.

Community consultation undertaken in the preparation of the Master Plan included:

  • Media briefing at the commencement of the consultations;
  • Establishment of a webpage and uploading of information about the project;
  • Distribution of flyers to local residents about consultation events;
  • Two Community Workshops;
  • Three Open Days;
  • Three Focus Group sessions involving community representatives;
  • Presentation to the Inner South Canberra Community Council;
  • Stakeholder discussions, including with representatives of the Glassworks and the Old Bus Depot Markets; and
  • Written submissions received from community representatives and stakeholders.

Kingston Arts Precinct – Feasibility Study 2015

The feasibility study built on the work of the Kingston Section 49 Master Plan and investigated the potential of the site for arts and cultural activity.

Consultation activities that occurred during the development of the Feasibility Study included:

  • 1:1 interviews with representatives from existing tenants on-site and key ACT visual arts organisations including Canberra Glassworks, Megalo Print Studio + Gallery, Old Bus Depot Markets, Craft ACT, PhotoAccess, ACT Potters Society and Canberra Contemporary Arts Space;
  • 1:1 interviews with representatives from other cultural organisations including Gallery of Australian Design, ArtSound FM, Screen ACT, Academy of Interactive Technology, MakeHackVoid, Zierholtz Brewery, Canberra Photographic Society, Skoolbo, Entry 29, Lighthouse Innovation Centre and Canberra Brickworks;
  • Two surveys completed by key visual organisations and range of other potential tenants;
  • Consultation with arts organisations on the functional brief for the Precinct;
  • Attendance at a Kingston Foreshore Stakeholder Meeting organised by the Land Development Agency; and
  • Phone discussions with representatives from the Kingston Barton Residents Group.
