2014 Community Engagement Process and Outcomes

The Canberra Brickworks + Environs Planning and Development Strategy was developed following commissioning of a Conservation Management Plan and community consultation conducted in 2010-11 (see 2010-2011 consultation). A number of community engagement activities were then conducted in relation to the Strategy in 2014. These included:

  • 16 May – Stakeholder Briefings

Briefing sessions were held to provide key stakeholder groups with information and seek feedback on the current Strategy. These groups included the Inner South Canberra Community Council (ISCCC), Residents Associations for Yarralumla and Deakin (YRA and DRA), Federal Member for Canberra, current Canberra Brickworks tenants and the Royal Canberra Golf Club (RCGC).

  • 27 May – Project Reference Group Meeting

This meeting was held to discuss the current Strategy and was attended by 16 key stakeholder groups and participants including the ISCCC, YRA, DRA, current Canberra Brickworks tenants, ACT Heritage Council, Australian Institute of Architects (ACT Chapter) and the Yarralumla Uniting Church.

  • 31 May – Community Information Session and Guided Tour of Canberra Brickworks

More than 275 people participated in the Community Information Session held onsite at the Canberra Brickworks, which included guided site tours of the complex. An Information Update Booklet was sent to residents and businesses of Yarralumla, Deakin and Curtin to provide information on the Strategy and promote the sessions. Representatives of the LDA were present to respond to queries and comments and a series of presentation boards were displayed providing an outline of the proposal. Feedback was invited from participants through conversations, a feedback form and written Post-it note comments. The reference materials and Community Consultation and Stakeholder Engagement Outcomes Report are below:

The community was invited to provide written submissions in response to the current Strategy. Following community feedback, the initial 4 week consultation period was extended to 6 weeks. More than 160 written submissions were received and have been reviewed by the LDA. The report below provides an overview of the key issues and feedback raised in these submissions:

The LDA conducted a telephone survey of 1,400 Canberra residents to obtain a sample of the community’s opinion on the development. The outcomes of this survey are provided in the Research Report below:

ACT Property Group is managing Stage One of the remediation process, including removal of contaminated materials from within the Canberra Brickworks site. Following completion of the Remedial Action Plan (PDF 6.2MB), a community information session was held to provide details specifically regarding the remediation process. Preparations for Stage One commenced in late September 2014. Further information is available on the Economic Development website.

  • Early November – Newsletter update

This Newsletter provides the community with updated information regarding the 2014 community engagement process. It outlines the key community considerations and points of interest identified during the comment period:

A comprehensive analysis of all comments received during the community engagement period was undertaken and in response the LDA reviewed a number of existing reports and commissioned further studies to identify possible modifications to the Strategy. Please refer to the 2015 Planning and Development Strategy page for information about the revised Strategy and outcomes of these studies.
