Neighbour Day – Sunday 29 March 2015

Neighbor DayResidents in Wright and Coombs came together on 29 March 2015 to meet, share a meal and celebrate Neighbour Day!

The weather was perfect, with around 120 people attending the afternoon in the park which included live music, fun races, face painting and the inaugural Wright Vs Coombs tug of war!

Official mascot from the Brumbies, Brumby Jack, did his best to assist the Coombs team who were slightly outnumbered by Wright residents! Perhaps the 2016 event will be more evenly matched.

Many residents brought a picnic supper to share with which promoted a fantasitic atmosphere and encouraged people to mix and mingle with their neighbours.

The 2016 event is sure to be bigger and better, with more residents moving in, the opening of several parks and the new school. In the meantime Mingle will continue to deliver a range of different activities and initiatives for Molonglo Valley residents. Make sure you get involved with your community!

Community BBQ - Saturday 8 November 2014

Community BBQOver 50 residents of Wright and Coombs came together on 8 November to enjoy a BBQ held at the Community Playground, on Max Jacobs Ave in Wright.

The BBQ offered residents the opportunity to connect and also ask questions and provide feedback which was overwhelmingly positive. One issue raised on the day was the lack of shade for the playground in the warmer months. In response, planning for a shade structure with installation expected in early 2015.

Many of the residents who attended indicated they would enjoy more activities where they could come together to connect and celebrate as a community. We are happy to report we will be running some great activities in 2015!

Thank you to Rotary Weston Creek and Rotary Sunshine who operated the BBQ on the day providing some delicious food. Classic tunes were provided by solo guitarist Wayne Ryder and Cooleman Court supported the event with food donations from various retailers including Home Grown Meats, Bakers Delight, Freddy Frapples Fruit & Veg and Woolworths.

Weekly Pram Pushers - Walking Group

Mingle Pram PushersAre you keen to meet your neighbours and get fit?

Mingle Community Development Officer, Karen Jesson kicked off this weekly walk with residents of Wright and Coombs back in October 2014 and immediately found an eager group of walkers.

The group continues to meet and is now run by enthusiastic residents. The times and meeting points can vary with changing seasons and other factors - keep your eyes on the Molonglo Valley Mingle Facebook Page for the latest information.

Why 'Pram Pushers'? Results from the 2014 Mingle community survey revealed many residents are passionate about health and fitness, and also showed there are many families with young children in the neighbourhood.

In response Pram Pushers was launched for parents and carers at home with young children. Pram Pushers is a great opportunity to get some exercise as well as connecting with other families in the community. People without children are welcome to attend.

No RSVP is required - just arrive ready to walk with appropriate walking shoes, hat, suncreen and water.

Energy Efficiency Workshop - 10 September 2014

""The Energy Efficiency workshop held for residents of Wright and Coombs on Wednesday 10 September was a great success.

The workshop was facilitated by Nicholas Mayo, an experienced teacher, facilitator and sustainable home builder. Eight residents participated in this workshop which was a smaller number than anticipated but allowed for greater interactions between participants and the facilitator.

The workshop focused on behaviour in the home, how to read electricity and gas bills, time of use rates and energy efficient appliances. Those that attended were provided a FREE electricity monitor for their home. The monitors do require a qualified electrician to install but once installed will enable residents to monitor their electricity use. In turn this will assist in reducing their energy consumption and costs.

Residents who participated in the workshop were also keen to come together again to continue their learning journey and to connect with their community.

Barrer Hill Tree Planting - Sunday 18 May 2014

Tree PlantingOn Sunday 18 May Greening Australia assisted 40 enthusiastic Molonglo Valley residents to plant over 500 native trees in the first stage of the Barrer Hill restoration project. Rangers were on hand to answer questions about the local habitat and point out the unique features of the landscape. Participants were able to include a message in a bottle which was planted at the base of the trees and preserved for generations to come.

Background to the Barrer Restoration Project

ACT Parks and Conservation Service is restoring an area of degraded Box-Gum Woodland within the Molonglo River Park opposite the new suburb of Coombs.

The Project will see Barrer Hill restored with native vegetation, while existing Box-Gum, Peppermint and Snow Gum woodlands will be enhanced and protected. The areas currently planted with exotic pines will also be re-established with native vegetation.

Barrer Hill and the surrounding region is home to the protected Pink-tailed Worm-lizard and many woodland birds.

'Jump into Fitness' and Mingle with new people

In March 2014 a trial fitness program was delivered for the Wright and Coombs community as part of the Mingle Community Development Program.

Our qualified Fitness Instructor introduced residents to a range of fun outdoor exercises over a 5 week program including boxing, circuits and gentle exercise for improving tone, strength and flexibility. The sessions were run in the Wright park.

The ACT Government subsidised the cost of the classes for residents. Unfortunately some classes were cancelled due to wet weather, however positive feedback was received from those residents who attended and consideration is being given to run this initiative again at a later date.
